Exhibition celebrates International Women’s Day at ECU

Ten Edith Cowan University Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts) students and Alumni will be holding an exhibition, conference and artist talks over the weekend of International Women’s Day 2019. The exhibition titled, WOMXN celebrates womanhood, coupled with the opportunity to critically explore gender roles, examine dominant societal attitudes and the notions of rigidity that surround them.

The opening night will be held on International Women’s’ Day, Friday 8 March, with the intention of this significant day to be used as a platform to foster empowerment, encouragement and to promote the work of diverse female identifying artists in Western Australia.

Exhibition organizer, Olivia Colja said,

“WOMXN historically is a more inclusive term; it was the title chosen for the exhibition to celebrate female artists from ECU, their artistic commitment and to bring forth equitable representation, professional development, support and advocacy.”

The exhibiting artists were invited by Colja to explore and give agency to topics such as female sexual health, menopause, miscarriage, sexual assault and the experience of being a woman artist. Each artist has reflexively examined womanhood and their life-worlds, to produce work that is strong, bold and thought provoking.

“We have been fortunate to receive to receive sponsorship from the City of Stirling and have partnered with Preventing Violence Against Women, which has enabled us to fund and promote the exhibition”, said Colja.

Alongside the exhibition is the ARTiculate Conference on Saturday, 9 March. Guest speakers have been invited to delve into their experiences to explore various topics relating to aspects of contemporary art practice including arts management, dealing with artistic ‘rejection’ and maintaining artistic practice and discipline. The conference will be brought to a close with a memorable performance piece.

Sunday, 10 March will be a day dedicated to hearing the exhibiting artists speak about their works in the exhibition and their art practices in general. Exhibitiing artists are Alaura Chapman-Williams, Emma Horvát, Holly Yoshida, Janice Fawcett, Shona McGregor, Sophie La Maitre, Stephanie De Biasi, Cian Holt, Omra Caoimhe, Daisy Safrasky and Olivia Colja. The artworks are made with a variety of materials ranging from found objects, projection, performance, oil and acrylic paints, photography, string, plaster, resin and wood.
Colja hopes the audience walks away feeling a sense of excitement, empowerment and respect.
