Poetics of cloth and an improvisational approach to embroidery
Joy is an interdisciplinary artist drawing on stitch and words to describe emotional responses, and their trigger effects on lived experience. Through a show and tell presentation (embroidery work and poetry) Joy will discuss how for her making art is no longer a matter of creating a purely representational image of something knowable that can be easily interpreted. Rather her work is concerned with unravelling feelings and emotional matters not yet known or full realised.
This notion of stitching into the unknown to where the mystery of the making process is a key aspect of Joy’s work practice. Joy will show how the materials and techniques she employs communicate a language that depict the messy complexities of living and articulate a sense of emotional repair: a kind of sensory mapping constructed from stitch and cloth to reveal traces of feelings and experiences in celebration of the ageing female body.
