End of Year Events at WAFTA

11th December 2024

We’ve had an extremely busy month near the end of an action-packed year. WAFTA presented four events this month! Thanks to everyone who came and made these such a success.

Carmen Tyrer Open Studio

We had an incredible day in Waroona today for Carmen Tyrer's open studio! People came from as far away as Albany, Busselton, Perth, Mandurah, Serpentine, and places in-between.

Carmen demonstrated wet felting and Nicole Frankewicz (Carmen's Euclay Australia business partner) led a workshop in this brilliant new product (which Carmen invented). We enjoyed hearing about Carmen's diverse arts practice and having a tour of her artworks which include paintings, textiles, ceramics, cold porcelain sculptures, wearable art, and now Euclay sculptures.

Thanks Carmen Tyrer for hosting such an inspiring day! Head to Carmen's website to learn more about her creative practice.

November Members' Meeting

Poetics of cloth and an improvisational approach to embroidery - Inspiring talk from Dr Joy Denise Scott. Joy was so kind to bring in lots of examples of her work and allow us to touch them and admire the details up close!

Head to Joy's website to learn more about her creative practice.

December Members Meeting - Speed Dating for Makers!

We tried something new for our end of year celebration and it was such a success that we will be doing it again in the future. Some attendees admitted to feeling apprehensive at first, but by the end of the first timer, the room was abuzz with conversation and excitement. Even those of us who have known each other for many years discovered something new about each other. We have been looking for ways to connect our many new members with the organisation and our speed dating for makers session is a keeper!

Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered Floor talk with Lee Kinsella

We were thrilled to receive an irresistible offer of a tour of Stuffed, Bolstered and Upholstered at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery by exhibition curator Lee Kinsella. This was an extraordinary exhibition and this gave attendees an in-depth understanding of the important works. Lee was very knowledgeable about the artists and their techniques and was generous and thoughtful in her hosting of our most inquisitive group.
